Young man pins on his badge
for the first time
Raise his hand swore an oath to uphold
That thin blue line.
In that first year alone
He answered over a thousand calls
Each one he never knew
What would be behind that wall

Most don’t ever see what this young man does
For the strangers driving by or the ones he loves
It can be a thankless job and most don’t have a clue
For what this man and his family must sacrifice
for that thin blue line

Mother of two joins the young man about a year later
He fills her in on the ins and outs and tries his best to train her
Three weeks in, they conduct a traffic stop just outside the city
It’s routine at first until those shots started ringing

Officer down comes across the radio as the young man cries out.
We have shots fired now, please send some help.
He pulls her back to his position, laid her down on a pile of brass
Did his best put em down, so he could bring her back
But it was to late to save her no matter what he did
That day would be her last time, she got hug her kids
