Spoken Intro Down here at Floyd County Prison, there’s a lot of shifts on the roster… But everybody knows there’s only one A Shift. We ain’t perfect. Hell, some of us ain’t even close. But when those gates shut behind us, we’ve got each other’s backs. Most of the time. Alright, Saunders… round up your circus. --- Verse 1 Sergeant Saunders runs the show, Keeps this crazy train on track. He’s the leader of the best damn shift, And we’ll damn sure tell you that. Then George comes walking through the door, Already running his mouth. If there’s a joke that shouldn’t be told, He’s gonna let that bastard out. He’ll roast you standing face-to-face, Then laugh like nothing’s wrong. Every crew needs one damn fool— And George has owned that job too long. --- Pre-Chorus Eight hours, twelve hours, Some days feel like twenty-four. We fuss, we cuss, we laugh like hell, Then come right back for more. --- Chorus We’re A Shift, baby, The best behind the wall. Half dysfunctional, half professional, But we answer when duty calls. You better think before you piss her off And watch the look upon her face. She’s like a stick of dynamite With a fuse about an inch. You’ll hear somebody whisper, “Boys, you better not make her flinch.” Then Long comes strolling down the hall, Easygoing, cool and slow. Nothing much can bother him… Unless you tell him there ain’t no food to go. He’s laid-back through the madness, Never looking for a fight. But every family needs that one Who says what others won’t. Might piss you off before breakfast, But leave you hanging? Hell, he don’t. --- Verse 4 Then here comes Officer Foxx, Phone glued firmly to his hand. If there’s one way to screw something up, Foxx will somehow find a second plan. You tell him, “Foxx, don’t touch that.” Five minutes later—something’s broke. And everybody standing there Ain’t even surprised enough to joke. Get him off that damn phone long enough And he might get something right. But if everything’s running perfectly… Don’t let Foxx near it tonight. --- Breakdown And then there’s Phillips… Looking like Gomez Addams walked out of the Addams Family and applied at Floyd County Prison. Right now he’s over in Japan, Talking sweet to his girlfriend… While the rest of us are back here wondering how Gomez got international. Phillips, if you’re listening— Kon'nichiwa, brother. Now bring your ass back to work. --- Final Chorus Yeah, we’re A Shift, baby, The best behind the wall. Saunders keeps us moving While George keeps roasting us all. Lewis might explode, Long is looking for a plate, Edwards is an asshole, And Foxx is probably running late. Phillips is somewhere in Japan Living that Addams Family life— And somehow Saunders wakes up every day And still agrees to lead this shift. We aggravate the hell out of each other, We joke and argue, fuss and fight. But when one of us needs another, A Shift is standing right beside. Because behind all these concrete walls, Through every long-ass day and night, We became more than just coworkers… We became the A Shift family. --- Spoken Outro Sergeant Saunders—the boss. George—the comedian nobody asked for. Lewis—the short fuse. Long—the human garbage disposal. Edwards—the asshole. Foxx… Well… Somebody check on Foxx. And Phillips— Gomez Addams himself, reporting live from Japan. Different personalities. Different attitudes. One screwed-up family. Floyd County Prison. A Shift. Best damn shift in the building.
