The Little Things You Left Behind

Versuri

[Verse 1] There’s a quiet spot north of Dawson, Where the water meets the sky, Where a boy could sit for hours, Watch the world go drifting by. With a fishing pole and a peaceful heart, He’d let the whole world slow, And if you ever needed finding him, That’s where you’d know to go. He loved the sand between his toes, The ocean rolling in, Collecting shells beside his mama, Like a little boy again. And every shell she finds now, Every sunset on that shore, Will hold a little piece of Carter, And the love they had before. [Chorus] Oh Carter, if you only knew, How much of you is shining through, In every laugh, in every tear, In every memory we hold dear. You’re in the waves, you’re in the trees, The fishing lines and summer breeze. Eighteen years could never be enough time, But you left a whole lot of love behind. [Verse 2] It was always, “Hey Mom, listen,” With a joke that made her groan, Or a TikTok sent at random, Just to make her laugh at home. And the family group chat’s quieter, Without those silly things he’d say, But they’ll still hear his voice in laughter, In a thousand little ways. There was a duck they named him Gary, In the window well one day, Steve said, “Son, just leave him be, I’ll get him out, okay?” But Carter had a mind of his own, And Gary didn’t make it through, Now “Don’t kill another Gary,” Is a joke they’ll always use. [Verse 3] He’d sit beside his mama, When the house was still at night, Talking ‘bout a little of everything, Till the morning met the light. And sometimes with her coffee, He’d pull up a chair and stay, Never knowing those small moments, Would mean everything someday. He taught her to have patience, In his own sweet, stubborn way, And now she’d give most anything, For one more ordinary day. One more hug, one more conversation, One more “Mom, you’ve gotta hear,” One more morning on that couch, With her favorite boy right there. [Verse 4] It started with just three of them, Taking on the world alone, A mama and her two sweet kids, Making anywhere their home. Then Steve came into their story, And love made room for more, Carter found the dad he’d needed, And a family worth fighting for. His sister was his best friend, Though they’d argue now and then, But through every changing season, They’d choose each other again. And he carried that same kindness, To the kids who needed hope, He’d stop and give them time and care, When they felt they couldn’t cope. [Bridge] He’d never played a down of football, Till his junior year came around, Then he put his heart into it, And earned his place out on that ground. He loved the gym, the hunt, the music, And a meal with protein too, Always working, always laughing, Always finding something new. But it wasn’t just the things he loved, Or the goals he tried to chase, It was how he made somebody feel, Like they mattered in that place. And all those kids are telling stories, Of the kindness that he showed, Sometimes the biggest hearts leave footprints, Farther than they’ll ever know. [Final Chorus – Soft, Building] Oh Carter, if you only knew, How much this world was changed by you, In every heart you helped to heal, In every laugh you made us feel. You’re in the waves, you’re in the trees, At Lac Lake in the evening breeze. Eighteen years could never be enough time, But you left a whole lot of love behind. [Outro – Quiet, Almost Spoken] So when the sun sets over Lac Lake, And the water turns to gold, When she finds another seashell, Or hears a joke you’ve told, She’ll remember all those mornings, And the nights you stayed up late, And how love lives in the little things, That time can’t take away. And if she could have one more moment, One more chance to hold you near, She’d say, “Thank you for being my Carter, I’m so glad I had you here.” Forever eighteen. Forever loved. Forever Carter.
