Antonella, Leave the Door

Låttext

[Verse 1] You keep the little blue cup by the sink And leave the kitchen window open a crack The Sunday train rolls past the olive trees You wave at nobody, then wave right back [Pre-Chorus] Your name is written on the parcel twine In my mother's careful, slanted hand You turn the paper over one more time As if a whole old summer might be there again [Chorus] Antonella, tell me what you see In the hills beyond the laundry line Antonella, save a place for me Where the apricots are sweet in summertime When the evening calls you home And the courtyard fills with voices I have known Antonella, leave the door unlatched I’ll find my way back [Verse 2] You mend the hem of your green Sunday dress With thread pulled from a biscuit tin The neighbors bring tomatoes from the garden And stay until the lamps come in [Pre-Chorus] You say the years are only folded cloth A little worn, but useful all the same Then you laugh and set another plate Like every road still leads us home again [Chorus] Antonella, tell me what you see In the hills beyond the laundry line Antonella, save a place for me Where the apricots are sweet in summertime When the evening calls you home And the courtyard fills with voices I have known Antonella, leave the door unlatched I’ll find my way back [Bridge] If the train runs late, let supper wait Keep the cup beside the stove I’ll bring the stories I have carried You can tell me what I missed at home [Final Chorus] Antonella, tell me what you see In the hills beyond the laundry line Antonella, save a place for me Where the apricots are sweet in summertime When the evening calls you home And the courtyard fills with voices I have known Antonella, leave the door unlatched I’ll find my way back [Outro] Antonella, leave the door unlatched I’ll find my way back
