TAKE ME BACK TO THE FIELD

Spoken Intro Some folks say there ain't no God. Some swear there ain't no devil. But I've never seen the morning without watching darkness leave. And I've never known what's good without knowing what evil can be. So maybe my problem ain't believing... Maybe my problem is wondering which words came from Heaven— and which ones came from men. Then I read one line that wouldn't leave me alone: "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." — 1 Thessalonians 5:21 So maybe God never told me to quit asking questions. Maybe He told me to search for what's true. Verse 1 They tell me there's a Heaven, They warn me there's a Hell. One man says the devil's real, Another says he ain't as well. But daylight needs the darkness For either one to have a name. You wouldn't know the warmth of mercy If you'd never stood in shame. If there's something we call goodness, Then evil leaves its scar. And if there's really no Creator, Why do we keep asking who we are? Pre-Chorus I ain't trying to tear down Heaven, I ain't saying faith is wrong. I'm just trying to hear God's whisper Through a thousand years of voices talking on. Chorus So take me back to the field, Where there ain't no stained-glass walls. No preacher standing over me Saying who God loves at all. Give me dirt beneath my boots, Give me sunrise on my face. Let the wind become the choir, Let that open field be grace. And I wonder when I'm reading, With these questions in my soul— Which words were meant to lead us, And which were meant to control? Which ones came like living water? Which ones came from fear and pride? Did God really build these fences, Or did we put His name outside? Spoken Scripture Then Jesus warned us Himself... "Beware of false prophets..." And He didn't say I'd know the truth by a building... Or a title... Or how loud somebody preached. He said— "Ye shall know them by their fruits." — Matthew 7:15–16 So maybe I ought to look at what a man's faith produces... Before I believe everything he tells me God said. Pre-Chorus 'Cause I don't need another argument About who's wrong and who is right. I want the truth that still sounds true When I'm standing there alone at night. Bridge Maybe God was never complicated. Maybe we made Him that way. Maybe He don't need a building Or a certain time to pray. Maybe church can be a hillside. Maybe pews can just be stones. Maybe prayer is one lost sinner Talking to his God alone. 'Cause Jesus said— "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." — Matthew 18:20 He never said there had to be a steeple. So give me two old chairs beneath an oak tree... And somebody willing to seek the truth with me. Breakdown I don't want somebody's version. I don't want somebody's fear. I don't want the words of Heaven changed until they're what we want to hear. If You spoke the truth, Lord, show me. Strip away what man concealed. And if Your voice is still among us... Let the sunrise be my scripture, Let creation testify. Let me ask You every question I've been scared to ask You why. I ain't running from You, Jesus. I'm just searching for what's real. I tested what they told me... Like Your own Word said I should. And I'm holding on to Jesus— And letting go of what ain't good. No walls between us, Lord. No man's voice drowning Yours. Maybe questioning isn't the enemy of faith. Maybe believing everything a man tells you... isn't faith at all. So I'll keep asking. I'll keep searching. And whatever survives the questions... Whatever still looks like love... Whatever still sounds like Jesus... That's what I'll hold on to. I'll be outside... waiting in the field.
