The resistance led by Chief Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and the Abeokuta Women’s Union (AWU) in the 1940s stands as one of the most brilliant and effective masterclasses in grassroots mobilization, anti-colonial protest, and structural defiance in African history. ​1. Historical Context: The Pressure Points ​By the mid-1940s, Abeokuta—a historic city in southwestern Nigeria—was buckling under a dual system of exploitation: ​Colonial Indirect Rule: The British colonial administration operated through the traditional ruler, the Alake of Abeokuta, Oba Ademola II. ​Unfair Taxation: While men paid a flat rate income tax, women—who formed the backbone of the region's economy as market traders, producers, and agriculturalists—were subjected to a separate, arbitrary flat-rate poll tax regardless of their individual income or economic standing. ​Monopolistic Abuses: Colonial authorities and allied elites imposed monopolistic controls on produce pricing, licensing, and market access, squeezing the financial life out of market women..
