Echoes in a Broken Mirror

Songtext

Yeah… I tell everyone I’m better since you’ve been gone But every night shows me that’s a lie It’s 3 a.m. again, I’m awake, pacing in circles Too many drinks, but I haven’t forgotten you—just drunk Too many faces here, but none like yours I search for your green in the crowd, but only find mine Last night I met a girl with eyes just like you But her gaze went right through me—I wasn’t me anymore, I was you She said, “It’s obvious you’re searching for who you lost” That in her eyes, I only see your reflection If someone asks me, I say, “I’m okay” But I see you in every look, no matter where I go [Pre-Hook] And I hope you’re happy with what I couldn’t be That he gives you everything I never could I hope when he looks at you, it’s more than with me But I know—I lose you over and over right here [Hook] But I say I’m better since you’ve been gone So why am I lying awake, thinking of you? Searching in strangers’ eyes for something of you But no matter who I see, I just lose myself here I hit the gas, sixth gear, trying to outrun myself But in every rearview mirror, I see what I’ve already lost I say I’m better, but don’t believe a word ’Cause no matter where I go, you’re still there Last night I saw you again Tried to ignore you, but I couldn’t leave You looked at me—too long, too quiet Like you knew exactly that I still want you And next to you stood that guy you’re holding He looked like he’s your whole world now And I swear, I understood it right away He had eyes as brown as mine—almost copied I wonder if you’re searching in him For what you once cursed in me If when he looks at you, you think for a second How it feels to give everything away And I walk out again, searching for you In every stranger’s face—but I can’t find you Another girl looks at me And says, “You look at me like I’m someone else, man” She says it’s clear in my eyes That in her, I’m just searching for what I lost—you [Pre-Hook] And I hope you’re happy with what I couldn’t be That he gives you everything I never could I hope when he looks at you, you stay this time And not like with me—turn cold and disappear [Hook] But I say I’m better since you’ve been gone So why am I lying awake, thinking of you? Searching in strangers’ eyes for something of you But no matter who I see, I just lose myself here I hit the gas, sixth gear, trying to outrun myself But in every rearview mirror, I see what I’ve already lost I say I’m better, but don’t believe a word ’Cause no matter where I go, you’re still there
