One came from battlefields, boots soaked in mud and rain,
The other left the sugar coast, all fire and unclaimed pain.
They met upon a stolen deck, both quiet, rough, and free,
Spoke little, but they moved alike—as wind moves through the sea.

All the sailors say,

Like shadows know the shape of flame—
Since that first breath of rain.”


The sky was dark in Spanish Town, the hemp rope twisted tight,
The crew all drank or disappeared the moment came to fight.
But two stood fast with eyes like stone, no cry, no boast, no plea—
Their captors saw not shame or fear, but something wild and free.

All the navy men,
“They never looked away—
They said, ‘The fiercest hearts aboard that brig
Were never ours to sway.’”


No grave holds what’s truly gone, no rope can quiet names,
Some vanish into silence, but these two lit their flames.
Now stories curl in tavern smoke and ride the tide to shore—
Where hands still raise a toast to those who broke and asked for more.
