Port Elliot
Founding and Early History:
Port Elliot, located on the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, was established in 1851 as the first seaport on the peninsula. The town was named after Charles Elliot, a British naval officer. Its establishment was driven by the need for a safer port than the treacherous Murray River mouth. The South Australian government chose Port Elliot for its sheltered waters and proximity to the Murray River trade route.

Economic Importance:
Port Elliot quickly became a crucial hub for the shipping of wool, grain, and other goods from the Murray River region. The town was connected to Goolwa by Australia’s first public railway in 1854, designed to transport goods between the river and the sea. However, the rocky coastline proved perilous, with several shipwrecks leading to the decline of the port's use for large-scale shipping.

Transition to Tourism:
As the port's commercial significance waned, Port Elliot transformed into a popular holiday destination. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became known for its stunning beaches, particularly Horseshoe Bay, and its relaxed coastal atmosphere. The town’s heritage, natural beauty, and historic railway station continue to attract visitors today.

Victor Harbor was initially explored in 1802 by British explorer Matthew Flinders and French explorer Nicolas Baudin, who named the area Encounter Bay after their surprising meeting. The town itself was named after HMS Victor, one of the ships in the British naval fleet. The area became an important site for whaling in the early 19th century.

Development as a Port:
Victor Harbor was established as a port in the 1860s, following the decline of Port Elliot as the primary seaport. The breakwater and causeway to Granite Island, constructed in the late 19th century, provided a safer harbor for shipping. Victor Harbor also became the terminus for the horse-drawn tramway from Goolwa, enhancing its role in regional trade.
