Jeremy Loves Tom

מילים

[Verse 1] Jeremy saves Tom a place beside the window Two coffees cooling while the afternoon slips by He knows the little crease that gathers when Tom laughs And every small detail he keeps like a reply [Pre-Chorus] Tom says, “You’re a good friend,” easy as a door held wide Jeremy smiles and lets the truth stay tucked inside [Chorus] Jeremy loves Tom, but Tom doesn’t love him back One heart running forward, one stays on its track He can make a whole bright evening out of one hello Then walks home with the answer he already knows Jeremy loves Tom, and it hurts him to pretend That a friendship is enough, that the wanting has an end [Verse 2] At a crowded birthday, Tom tells him about someone Jeremy lifts his glass and keeps his voice light He claps along when Tom gets pulled into the dancing Then folds the paper napkin smaller through the night [Pre-Chorus] Tom says, “You’re a good friend,” and means every word Jeremy nods, though the room blurs around what he heard [Chorus] Jeremy loves Tom, but Tom doesn’t love him back One heart running forward, one stays on its track He can make a whole bright evening out of one hello Then walks home with the answer he already knows Jeremy loves Tom, and it hurts him to pretend That a friendship is enough, that the wanting has an end [Bridge] Maybe someday he’ll stop rehearsing what to say Stop saving every message from an ordinary day But tonight he’ll wish Tom well and mean it, mostly true Then take the long way home with all that love still due [Final Chorus] Jeremy loves Tom, but Tom doesn’t love him back One heart running forward, one stays on its track He can make a whole bright evening out of one hello And let the morning find him learning to let go Jeremy loves Tom, no blame and no demand Just a tender, stubborn feeling he can’t quite understand [Outro] Tom waves goodbye; Jeremy waves too The night keeps turning, and the feeling stays true
