Casey

Letra

You were just a little girl, Casey, when your mama and I split, Too young to know why daddies and mamas just quit. I thought it was her keepin’ you from pickin’ up the phone, But you graduated high school and you still stayed gone. Now you’re twenty-five and every message comes back blocked, And I’m left here wonderin’ what story she talked. Chorus What did she tell you, Casey, that made me the villain? Did she paint me so dark that the light just couldn’t fill in? Did you forget the nights I held you, the way we used to laugh? The love that was real before the last time we passed? Why won’t you call, baby, why haven’t you called? I’ve been holdin’ on so long, and the silence’s got me stalled. I don’t know if I can keep this up, maybe I should just let go… But I wish I knew the answers, ’cause the not-knowin’ hurts the most. Verse 2 I keep thinkin’ maybe one day, Casey, you’ll remember how it felt, The little hand in my big one, the trust before it all fell. But the years keep stackin’ up and the door stays locked tight, And every quiet birthday just digs a little deeper at night. I’ve tried every way I know, and you shut every one down, And I’m startin’ to wonder if the love we had drowned. Bridge Maybe I should quit waitin’ for a call from Casey that ain’t comin’, Quit starin’ at a phone that just stays cold and numb. Maybe she’s built a life where there’s no room for me, And the little girl I loved is someone I won’t ever see. But every time I try to move on, somethin’ pulls me right back, To the empty space she left and the love that I can’t pack. Final Chorus So what did she tell you, Casey, that made me the villain? Did she erase every good thing so nothin’ could fill in? Did you forget the nights I held you… or did you just decide That a daddy who left was easier to push aside? Why won’t you call, Casey… why haven’t you called? I’ve been holdin’ on forever, and it’s wearin’ me raw. I don’t know if I can keep this up… maybe I should just let go. God, I wish I knew the answers… I just wish I knew.
