My Heart Stayed Home

Songtext

[Verse 1] I packed my dreams in an old suitcase, A little hope and a picture from home. I took that road to find a better life, But I’ve never felt so far alone. I left my family there behind me, Their voices still ride these miles. When someone asks me how I’m doing, I put on my best smile. [Chorus] I may be miles away, but my heart stayed home, Down the road where my people are waiting. I keep my head high and keep moving on, Though some nights the homesick hurts like crazy. I didn’t come here to forget where I’m from, I came to build a life and send love back home. [Verse 2] There’s a photograph beside my bed, Your Sunday dress, the porch, the old oak tree. I call when I can, though the hours don’t match, And save every story you tell me. The workday ends, the room gets quiet, I hear your laugh in the things I do. I tell myself this road will turn around, And one day I’ll be there with you. [Chorus] I may be miles away, but my heart stayed home, Down the road where my people are waiting. I keep my head high and keep moving on, Though some nights the homesick hurts like crazy. I didn’t come here to forget where I’m from, I came to build a life and send love back home. [Bridge] If I could fold this distance up, I’d tuck it in my coat and bring it through. Until that day, I’ll carry every word You leave for me, and every word I do. [Final Chorus] I may be miles away, but my heart stayed home, Down the road where my people are waiting. I keep my head high and keep moving on, Though some nights the homesick hurts like crazy. I didn’t come here to forget where I’m from, I came to build a life and send love back home. [Outro] I’ll keep that picture close, And keep a place for you in every road.
