What I Should've Become

Paroles

[Verse 1] Old headlights cutting through the East Texas rain Gravel on the floorboard, rust on the chain Got a burned-out cassette in the dashboard player And a quiet little prayer that I never say right [Chorus] And the highway is long, but the whiskey is cold Trading my twenties for a story to be told Yeah, the tires hit the pavement like a beat-up drum Singing songs to the ghost of what I should've become [Verse 2] Telephone poles running blurry and gray Counting down the counties till I'm miles away From the porch where we swore we'd never grow old Now the wind's blowing bitter and the coffee is cold [Chorus] And the highway is long, but the whiskey is cold Trading my twenties for a story to be told Yeah, the tires hit the pavement like a beat-up drum Singing songs to the ghost of what I should've become [Bridge] And if heaven's a bar with a neon sign I'll be sitting in the corner with a glass of red wine Waiting for the morning to wash out the sin Or at least give me somewhere to start over again [Guitar Solo] [Chorus] And the highway is long, but the whiskey is cold Trading my twenties for a story to be told Yeah, the tires hit the pavement like a beat-up drum Singing songs to the ghost of what I should've become [Outro] Yeah, what I should've become... Just fading out. [Fade to acoustic guitar]
