You didn't have enough to eat, you had to wear dirty clothes, and you had no one to protect you, or your parents were too drunk or high to take care of you or take you to the doctor if you needed it. - 6. Your parents were separated or divorced. - 7. Your mother or stepmother was often pushed, grabbed, slapped or had something thrown at her or was sometimes or often kicked, bitten, hit with a fist or hit with something hard, or was repeatedly hit over at least a few minutes or threatened with a gun or knife. - 8. A household member was a problem drinker or alcoholic, or used street drugs. - 9. A household member was depressed or mentally ill or a household member attempted suicide. - 10. A household member went to prison. Sexual Abuse Note: The client has endorsed experiencing sexual abuse during childhood (Question 3). Research by Briggs et al. (2021) identifies sexual abuse as the most reactive adverse childhood experience, indicating that it can interact with other adverse experiences to create disproportionate impacts on health and wellbeing. Even when the total ACE score falls elow the traditional clinical threshold of 4, the presence of sexual abuse warrants significant clinical attention, particularly when combined with other adversities such a: neglect or physical abuse.
