The Traveling Circus

Songtekst

[Verse 1] You rolled in at noon with a red-painted wagon, A brass-button ringmaster, grinning and bragging. The tent rose up where the hayfield bends, And every dusty lane brought curious friends. [Chorus] Come along, come along, the canvas is wide, There’s a bear on a bicycle and a moon-faced bride. One ticket, one turn, let the whole town spin— When the traveling circus comes, the marvels begin! [Verse 2] Mara walked high on a silver-wire thread, A feathered blue hat and a ribbon of red. Old Jules coaxed a tune from a cracked wooden flute, While a clever white pony wore Sunday-best boots. [Chorus] Come along, come along, the canvas is wide, There’s a bear on a bicycle and a moon-faced bride. One ticket, one turn, let the whole town spin— When the traveling circus comes, the marvels begin! [Bridge] Then the lamps went low and the last cart rolled, A child held tight to a lion of gold. “Will they come back?” “When the roads are kind.” The wheelmarks crossed the field like a parting sign. [Chorus] Come along, come along, the canvas is wide, There’s a bear on a bicycle and a moon-faced bride. One ticket, one turn, let the whole town spin— When the traveling circus comes, the marvels begin! [Outro] Past the mill, past the bend, hear the wagon bells sing— The road keeps a place for the next grand thing!
