Take the Long Way Home

Lirik

[Verse 1] Your blue Ford coughed by the feed-store sign With a paper map folded on the dash You said, “Take the county road past Miller’s pond,” Then laughed when the back tire threw up grass The radio was stuck between two stations Your hand kept time against the door We were headed nowhere special And I still wanted one mile more [Chorus] Take the long way home, let the blacktop bend Past the water tower and the river’s edge If the night runs out, we’ll watch the day come on With your boots on the seat and the windows gone Take the long way home, don’t ask me when I’ve got all I need in this old Ford again [Verse 2] At the diner, June was stacking chairs She poured us coffee in a chipped blue cup You drew a little heart beside the check I wrote your name, then crossed it out The jukebox quit halfway through a chorus The cook was sweeping crumbs away You said the town felt smaller lately I said, “Maybe we just grew some space” [Chorus] Take the long way home, let the blacktop bend Past the water tower and the river’s edge If the night runs out, we’ll watch the day come on With your boots on the seat and the windows gone Take the long way home, don’t ask me when I’ve got all I need in this old Ford again [Bridge] There’s a gate across the gravel road And a new lock on the place we knew But the creek still cuts behind the fence And it still sounds a little like you [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus] Take the long way home, let the blacktop bend Past the water tower and the river’s edge When the morning breaks, we’ll keep rolling on With your boots on the seat and the windows gone Take the long way home, don’t ask me when I’ve got all I need in this old Ford again [Outro] Your blue Ford coughs, then the engine catches We turn where the county line runs thin
