Leave the Porch Light On

Lirik

[Verse 1] Mama, I still fold my shirt the way you showed me One small square of home in this gray room The phone goes quiet when the minutes run out I keep your last hello like a note in my shoe I drew our kitchen window on the paper cup Put the little plant beside the sink I’m sorry for the nights I made you wait up And every promise I was too proud to keep [Pre-Chorus] They count the doors, I count the days I count the ways I let you down If love can cross this distance, let it find you Tell my little brother I still say his name [Chorus: Duo] [Lead] If you can hear me through these walls, I’m still your son [Second voice] Still your son (still your son) [Lead] I wear the weight of what I’ve done, but I’m not gone [Second voice] Not gone (not gone) [Both] Save me a place at the table, leave the porch light on I’m learning how to face the morning, one day at a time [Verse 2] The man in the bunk below me hums a hymn Says his daughter’s turning eight this spring We trade our stories when the hallway settles Two tired hearts trying not to lose everything I used to think that sorry was a word You said to make the room move on Now I write it slow until it sounds like work And ask myself what I’ll do when I come home [Pre-Chorus] They count the doors, I count the days I count the ways I’ll make things right If love can cross this distance, let it find you I’m trying to become someone you can look at twice [Chorus: Duo] [Lead] If you can hear me through these walls, I’m still your son [Second voice] Still your son (still your son) [Lead] I wear the weight of what I’ve done, but I’m not gone [Second voice] Not gone (not gone) [Both] Save me a place at the table, leave the porch light on I’m learning how to face the morning, one day at a time [Bridge] When the gate swings wide, I won’t ask you to forget I’ll show up early, take the long way, earn what I can get If you need time, I’ll give you time If you need truth, I’ll tell it plain I can’t undo the hurt I handed you But I can choose what happens next [Final Chorus: Duo] [Lead] If you can hear me through these walls, I’m still your son [Second voice] Still your son (still your son) [Lead] I wear the weight of what I’ve done, but I’m not gone [Second voice] Not gone (not gone) [Both] Save me a place at the table, leave the porch light on I’m learning how to face the morning, one day at a time [Outro] One day at a time I’ll come home different One day at a time
