Promise at Home

Testo

[Intro] Mum's kettle clicks, rain taps the pane Two missed calls, still I know the name [Verse 1] Bus pass bent in the pocket of my coat Cold hands tucked where the old seams broke You said, “Stay sharp,” by the corner shop door I was counting each step, not the cash anymore Blue pen notes on a takeaway sleeve Plans too big for the room we could leave I watched mates make a turn for the quick way out Kept my head down, let the work speak loud [Chorus] We came up with the weight on our backs Still put one foot down, then the next one back If you call, I’ll answer, if you fall, I’ll reach Made a promise at home, now I’m keeping it clean [Verse 2] Old tracksuit, fresh crease, late train north Rain on the glass, whole town moving forth Your little brother asks if the road gets kind I said, “Not every day, but you’ll make your own time” No big talk, just a list and a date One more shift, one more bill to take I kept that note that you slid through the gate “Don’t let a hard week decide your fate” [Chorus] We came up with the weight on our backs Still put one foot down, then the next one back If you call, I’ll answer, if you fall, I’ll reach Made a promise at home, now I’m keeping it clean [Bridge] When the last bus goes and the shop shutters fall I still hear your voice cutting through it all No crown, no shortcut, no borrowed name Just a small bright room and a reason to change [Final Chorus] We came up with the weight on our backs Still put one foot down, then the next one back If you call, I’ll answer, if you fall, I’ll reach Made a promise at home, now I’m keeping it clean [Outro] Kettle clicks, rain eases off Tomorrow’s close; we’re not stopping
