Beneath the Thorn Tree

Testo

[Verse 1: Woman] You left your silver button By the chapel garden gate I keep it in my pocket Like a promise kept too late [Verse 2: Man] The frost has sealed the fountain Where we swore we’d meet again I still know the path by heart Though the yew trees hide the lane [Pre-Chorus: Woman] If I call you through the winter Will the old walls let you through? [Chorus: Duet] Take my hand across the years Past the briar, past the stone Love was brief, but love was ours And no grave can make it gone If the morning finds us parted Let the bells remember two I was yours beneath the thorn tree I was home when I had you [Verse 3: Man] I have carried one red ribbon Through the kingdoms of the rain Every road returns me slowly To the door I left in pain [Verse 4: Woman] Then come softly, don’t wake the house The portraits know your name I have saved the little candle Though its flame is not the same [Bridge: Duet] [Woman] The years have changed the roses [Man] The ivy crossed the stair [Woman] But somewhere in the silence [Man] Your breath is waiting there [Duet] So let the dark be gentle Let the last snow veil the ground We will meet where the bells are sleeping Where no farewell can be found [Final Chorus: Duet] Take my hand across the years Past the briar, past the stone Love was brief, but love was ours And no grave can make it gone If the morning finds us parted Let the bells remember two I was yours beneath the thorn tree I was home when I had you [Outro] [Wordless choir] [English horn and fading strings]
