The Other Side of Midnight

Lirik

[Intro – Pulsing analog synth, elastic bass, clipped guitar] One more minute, one more mile Haven’t seen you in a while Oh-oh, oh-oh Meet me on the other side [Verse 1 – Conversational, syncopated vocals] Half past eleven, the television’s talking Somebody’s arguing about the end of the world I’m on the sofa in yesterday’s clothing Watching the ceiling fan go round and round Then your name lights up across the table Three little words: “Are you awake?” Now I’m looking for the keys to my apartment And the last bus leaves at twelve-oh-eight [Pre-Chorus – Bass climbs, bright synth arpeggios] There’s a green light at the crossing And the whole street’s standing still You say, “Don’t ask where we’re going” And for once, I don’t think I will [Chorus – Explosive guitars, layered vocals, soaring melody] Meet me on the other side of midnight! Where the traffic lights are changing just for us We’ve been doing everything by daylight Making all our little plans and missing all the fun Oh-oh, we’re a little off the map Oh-oh, no particular way back Meet me on the other side of midnight We’ve got nothing figured out, and I like that [Post-Chorus – Funky bass, falsetto harmonies] Ah-ah-ah, the other side! Ah-ah-ah, we’re out tonight! Left, right, never mind Meet me on the other side! [Verse 2 – Angular guitars, playful rhythmic delivery] We miss the bus by something like a minute You say, “Well, that’s a promising start” So we walk until we find an all-night diner With a plastic moon above the parking lot There’s a waitress with a crossword on the counter And a jukebox that won’t play the second verse You tell me how you nearly moved to London I tell you how I nearly did something worse [Pre-Chorus – Rising harmonies, restless drums] And I can’t remember what was worrying me Somewhere back at half past ten You laugh so hard you spill your coffee And I think, “There you are again” [Chorus – Full band, wide vocal harmonies] Meet me on the other side of midnight! Where the traffic lights are changing just for us We’ve been doing everything by daylight Making all our little plans and missing all the fun Oh-oh, we’re a little off the map Oh-oh, no particular way back Meet me on the other side of midnight We’ve got nothing figured out, and I like that [Instrumental – Dirty analog synth riff, interlocking guitar and bass, driving drums] [Bridge – Stripped-back bass, intimate vocals] There’s no photograph worth taking No spectacular view Just a diner slowly closing And a night I’m glad I spent with you You say, “Funny how it happens When you stop expecting much” And I don’t have an answer But I think you’ve said enough [Build – Percussion builds, layered vocals] One more street, one more turn Watch the windows come alive One more song, one more mile We’ve got nowhere else tonight! [Final Chorus – Euphoric, soaring vocals, explosive drums] Meet me on the other side of midnight! Where the traffic lights are changing just for us We’ve been doing everything by daylight Making all our little plans and missing all the fun Oh-oh, we’re a little off the map Oh-oh, no particular way back Meet me on the other side of midnight We’ve got nothing figured out, and I like that! [Outro – Bass groove, fading synth, playful falsetto] The sky’s gone blue above the rooftops First bus pulling up at twelve past five You say, “Same time next Friday?” I say, “I thought you’d never ask” Oh-oh, oh-oh Meet me on the other side [End – Sharp synchronized guitar and drum finish]
