A Light in Our Darkness

Lirik

[Spoken Intro] Though your sins be as scarlet, They shall be as white as snow. [Verse 1] We lifted our hands, but our hearts turned away, We offered our songs, then refused to obey. The poor stood forgotten outside of our doors; We guarded our comfort and still wanted more. You called us to justice, to turn from our wrong, To care for the helpless, not only sing songs. There in the darkness, Your mercy shone through: A call to return and begin life anew. [Pre-Chorus] Who could bring light where our hope had grown dim? Who could restore what was broken within? Into our darkness, Your promise would come: A Child would be born; You would give us a Son. [Chorus] For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given. Light has dawned upon our night, Hope has come to earth from heaven. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Upon Your shoulders rests the kingdom; Your righteous reign will never cease. [Verse 2] A people in darkness would see a great light; A dawn would break through their shadow of night. The burden of ruling would rest upon You, With justice and mercy in all You would do. Upon David’s throne, You would faithfully reign; Your kingdom of peace would forever remain. Not built on oppression, not driven by pride; The weak and forgotten find You by their side. [Instrumental Interlude] [Spoken Scripture] Arise, and take the young child and his mother, And flee into Egypt. When he arose, he took the young child And his mother by night, And departed into Egypt. [Verse 3] An angel warned Joseph one night in a dream; The child must be taken beyond Herod’s reach. He rose in the darkness and led them away; In Egypt they sheltered, in Egypt they stayed. When Herod had died, came the word to return; And Joseph arose with the mother and Son. The One we would know as our shelter and care Was carried to safety, a child sheltered there. [Verse 4] Despised and rejected, acquainted with grief, You carried the sorrow we could not release. We looked on Your suffering, turned from Your pain; Yet You bore our sins and You carried our shame. Like sheep we had wandered, each choosing our way; You carried the burden of those gone astray. Like a lamb to the slaughter, You suffered our wrong; You poured out Your life, yet Your love carried on. [Quiet Refrain] Wounded for our transgressions, Bruised for our iniquities. You bore the cost of our forgiveness; Through Your wounds, You brought us peace. [Instrumental Build] [Bridge] They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruninghooks. Let the iron that wounded now work in the field; Let the ground scarred by battle bring forth a new yield. Tools for the harvest, not weapons of fear; Bread for the hungry, a future held dear. [Choir] Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war any more. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war any more. [Bridge — Full Voices] Teach us Your justice; lead us in light. Turn us from hatred; teach us what’s right. Hands once divided, now planting the grain; Prince of Peace, let Your righteousness reign. [Music Softens] [Spoken Scripture] And, behold, I come quickly; And my reward is with me. [Final Chorus] The Child was born, the Son was given; The Lamb poured out His life in love. Now we await our coming Savior; Our hearts are lifted up above. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. We trust Your promise: You are coming. Your righteous reign will never cease. [Choir Refrain] Your righteous reign will never cease. Jesus, our Prince of Peace. [Outro] Until You come, let mercy guide us; Until You come, make justice grow. Let us feed the hungry neighbor; Let our lives Your kindness show. [Spoken Ending] Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. [Instrumental Fade]
