Bats in the Belfry

Songtekst

[Verse 1] The clock tower coughs at a quarter to ten A black wing cuts through the churchyard again You hear that old bell give a crooked little ring Then something with teeth starts to circle the steeple [Pre-Chorus] You said, “Keep your eyes on the door” But the door’s on the other side [Chorus] Bats in the belfry, beating the night Bats in the belfry, taking flight You can run, you can hide, you can pray But the bells know the way Bats in the belfry, calling your name Bats in the belfry, remember the flame [Verse 2] The organist’s coat hangs empty and still A red candle gutters against the cold sill You find your own shadow stretched long on the wall Then it turns its head when you don’t [Pre-Chorus] You said, “Keep your eyes on the door” But the door’s on the other side [Chorus] Bats in the belfry, beating the night Bats in the belfry, taking flight You can run, you can hide, you can pray But the bells know the way Bats in the belfry, calling your name Bats in the belfry, remember the flame [Bridge] One bell for the living Two bells for the dead Three bells for the thing That’s waiting overhead You hear your own footsteps Then they stop behind you The tower starts laughing And the dark comes through [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus] Bats in the belfry, beating the night Bats in the belfry, taking flight You can run, you can hide, you can pray But the bells know the way Bats in the belfry, calling your name Bats in the belfry, remember the flame Bats in the belfry— Remember the flame! [Outro] The clock strikes twelve The bells go still Something wings past Over the hill
