Take the Long Way Home

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Charlie keeps a jar of buttons by the kitchen door Says each one came from somewhere worth remembering for A blue one from a winter coat, a brass one from a vest He turns them in his palm awhile, then lets the stories rest [Pre-Chorus] You don't have to hurry You don't have to know Which way the day will turn before you go [Chorus] Charlie, take the long way home Past the garden, past the old stone wall There's a place for every little thing you are And you don't have to carry it all Charlie, when the evening settles in Leave the porch light on and let the day be done There is room to start again tomorrow There is room for everyone [Verse 2] He knows the baker's dog by name, the mailman's favorite tea He leaves a note for Mrs. Lee when she's been in all week On Saturdays he mends the gate that leans beside the lane And saves the crooked little nails; he says they work again [Pre-Chorus] You don't have to hurry You don't have to know Some things grow kinder when you let them grow [Chorus] Charlie, take the long way home Past the garden, past the old stone wall There's a place for every little thing you are And you don't have to carry it all Charlie, when the evening settles in Leave the porch light on and let the day be done There is room to start again tomorrow There is room for everyone [Bridge] When the rain comes through the screen door And the roof gives one slow knock He puts the kettle on for two And sets the clock back on the clock [Final Chorus] Charlie, take the long way home Past the garden, past the old stone wall There's a place for every little thing you are And you don't have to carry it all Charlie, let the evening settle in Leave the porch light on; the day's already done There is room to start again tomorrow There is room for everyone [Outro] There is room for everyone Charlie, take the long way home
