I wrote a new piece. I’ve been told I should submit it. These Are the Days I Just Don’t Matter I remember a time I mattered. I wasn’t perfect, not even close, they loved me anyway. And I mattered the most. Then they grew, as children do. And now are the days I no longer matter. I reach for a hug and only meet air, rolling eyes, piercing stares. Slowly they forgot the closeness we had. Those memories faded. Now they tell me I’m bad. Their words cut deep, like daggers to my heart, so I started removing all my flawed parts. I ripped myself open, and started stripping away… I still don’t matter, we’re still not okay. Like a rag doll, once loved, now forgotten, and tossed on a shelf. Unrecognizable, I’m losing myself. These are the days I just don’t matter. But I hold the weight of when I did. Like bittersweet echoes, pounding my ribs. Unforgiven and unwanted, by grudges I don’t understand. I wish I could kiss their foreheads, and hold their sweet hands. These thoughts, they torment my mind, and they leave my heart shattered. Before the day comes, when I breathe my last breath, I hope I’m remembered— I was their mom, and I once mattered.
