A blinking icon showed the last known location of nearly two hundred civilians—mostly women and children—trapped behind enemy lines. Outside, engines idled. Inside, forty soldiers stood at attention. Colonel Nathaniel Hayes looked across the faces before him. Men and women who had already given years of their lives in service.
