Obituary of Damien Ian Sykes Damien Ian Sykes passed away peacefully in his sleep, with no pain, no fear, and no regret, surrounded by the love of the life he built and the legacy he worked so hard to create. He is survived by his beloved wife, Alexandra, his four sons, his four daughters, and the many people whose lives were forever changed by knowing him. Throughout his lifetime, Damien was a man driven by purpose. He believed deeply that healthcare, mental health, and social services should treat people as human beings, not as medical record numbers. His passion for patient care led him to dedicate his life to helping others find stability, dignity, and hope. He worked with individuals facing mental health struggles, addiction, financial hardship, and housing instability, always reminding them that taking care of themselves first was the key to building the life they wanted. Damien believed that when a person puts their health first — physically, mentally, and emotionally — everything else can follow. He lived by that principle, and he taught it to everyone around him. During his life, Damien helped create and support programs that gave people second chances. He worked toward building structured living environments, including sober living homes, foster care support, and community resources designed to help people rebuild their lives. He never apologized for caring too much, and he never stopped fighting for systems to change, even when it meant doing things his own way. One of Damien’s greatest sources of strength and inspiration was his wife, Alexandra. He often said that she helped him see the life he was truly meant to live. Through her honesty, strength, and unwillingness to let him settle for less than his best, she helped him envision the future he always wanted but could not always see on his own. Damien would often say that Alexandra was the most pivotal and important part of his life, and that many of the dreams he was able to accomplish were possible because she believed in him even when he struggled to believe in himself. In many ways, he felt that she helped make his dreams come true, not by doing the work for him, but by helping him see that the life he wanted was actually possible. One of Damien’s greatest sources of pride was his family. He often spoke about legacy, not as money or possessions, but as something that continues after you are gone. He believed that the greatest gift he could leave behind was a path for his children to carry forward the work of helping others. He was especially proud of his daughter Patience, who at one time planned to continue his legacy in healthcare by pursuing a physician assistant program after graduating from San Francisco State University. Although life took a different direction and she was not able to follow through with that path, Damien always believed that success is not about staying on one road, but about having the courage to pivot when life calls for it. Patience did exactly that. She built a successful career in real estate, helping people find homes and create stability in their lives. Damien often said that even though she did not follow him into healthcare, she was still enriching people’s lives in her own way, helping families make their dreams come true. He was proud that she carried the lessons he taught — that you can change directions, you can start over, and you can still make a difference. Damien wanted those who knew him to remember one simple message: Take care of yourself first, so you can take care of the people you love. He believed that sacrificing yourself until nothing is left does not help anyone, but that strength, health, and self-respect allow you to touch more lives than you ever thought possible. He hoped the life he lived would leave behind a little more humility, a little more hope, and a little more faith that anyone can change their life if they are willing to do the work. He lived with a plan, and his plan was never just for himself. His plan was for all of us — to keep going, to keep growing, and to keep helping each other. If Damien were here to say one last thing, it would be the words he said so often: Take care of yourself first, so you can help everyone else — and always keep that shit moving.
