How to use a voice changer in VRChat

1

Install Voices AI Live

Download the free Windows app and accept the virtual microphone install. Restart if Windows asks you to.

2

Pick a voice

Preview the voices in the app - or clone your own from a 5-second recording - and select one.

3

Choose the microphone in VRChat

Open Settings, go to Audio & Voice, and set the microphone device to CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable).

4

Test in a mirror

Unmute, step in front of a mirror, and watch the mic level to confirm VRChat hears your AI voice.

Why VRChat players use AI voice changers

In VRChat your avatar is your identity, and a voice that does not match breaks the illusion. Classic pitch shifters make a deep voice sound like a chipmunk, not like the character you are wearing. AI voice conversion replaces the voice itself, so an idol avatar sounds like a pop singer and a horror avatar sounds like a villain.

You can also clone your own voice, which is handy for a recognizable persona across worlds and streams.

VR performance tips

VR rendering and voice conversion both use your GPU. If frames drop, lower VRChat's graphics or avatar performance settings first and close overlays you are not using. Turn off VRChat's own microphone noise suppression if the AI voice sounds muffled.

VRChat voice changer not working? Quick fixes

VRChat doesn't list the Voices AI microphone

Start Voices AI Live first, then fully quit and reopen VRChat so it rescans audio devices. Look for CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) on Windows or Voices AI Virtual Mic on Mac. If it is still missing, restart your computer to finish the virtual microphone install.

My avatar mouth moves but people hear my real voice

VRChat is using your headset microphone. Change the microphone device in Audio & Voice settings while Voices AI Live is running.

The voice sounds robotic, choppy, or cuts out

Turn off extra noise suppression in the app you are talking in, close GPU-heavy programs you are not using, and check your computer meets the Voices AI Live system requirements.

Other people hear an echo or their own voice

Use headphones. Speaker audio leaking into your real microphone gets converted and sent back to everyone.
