The Long Way Home

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your blue mug by the sink Beside the note about the rain I read it while the kettle clicked And watched the window cloud again [Pre-Chorus] The day kept asking what comes next I let the question wait [Chorus] We can take the long way home Past the orchard, past the stones Let the afternoon unfold One small mile at a time You don't have to make it right We can leave the porch light on Take the long way home tonight And let the road be kind [Verse 2] Your sleeve was caught upon the gate You laughed and pulled the thread away We bought two peaches from the stand And ate them walking through the shade [Pre-Chorus] The sky turned copper over fields The hour loosened its hold [Chorus] We can take the long way home Past the orchard, past the stones Let the afternoon unfold One small mile at a time You don't have to make it right We can leave the porch light on Take the long way home tonight And let the road be kind [Bridge] If tomorrow brings its papers And the list we couldn't do There is room beside the doorway For the shoes we wore with you [Final Chorus] We can take the long way home Past the orchard, past the stones Let the afternoon unfold One small mile at a time You don't have to make it right We can leave the porch light on Take the long way home tonight And let the road be kind [Outro] Blue mug waiting by the sink Rain easing off the windowpane
