Small Enough to Fit the Day

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Your red rain boots by the kitchen door, A jar of buttons on the wooden floor, We made a fort from the quilt and chairs, And named the dust motes sailing there. [Chorus] We were small enough to fit the day, Barefoot past the garden gate, You held my hand across the creek, Like we had all the time we’d need. [Verse 2] Grandpa’s clock kept losing five, While peaches cooled outside in a pie, You drew a map in sidewalk chalk, Then walked me home around the block. [Chorus] We were small enough to fit the day, Barefoot past the garden gate, You held my hand across the creek, Like we had all the time we’d need. [Bridge] The swing still squeaks when the wind comes through, The fence leans toward the old canoe, I pass that yard and slow my pace, Still see your grin in that sunlit place. [Final Chorus] We were small enough to fit the day, Barefoot past the garden gate, You held my hand across the creek, And some part of me is still that sweet. [Outro] Your red rain boots by the kitchen door, I can almost hear them on the floor.
