Before the Morning

Lyrics

[Intro] You left your coat on the back of my chair Rain on the sleeve, your perfume still there [Verse 1] You said the last train was already gone I watched the red tail lights carry you on Your silver ring in the coin dish at home A little cold moon I keep touching alone [Pre-Chorus] I know what pride can do It makes a locked door feel like truth But if you turn around tonight I’ll leave the hallway light [Chorus] Come back before the morning takes your name Before this quiet settles in and stays I don’t need promises dressed up in gold Just your hand in mine when the room turns cold Come back, come back, don’t let the good years end I’d rather start again than call us friends [Verse 2] Your note by the kettle said, “Please don’t wait” I read it twice, then I read it too late The phone on the table, your number still saved My thumb over call like a fool being brave [Pre-Chorus] I know what pride can do It makes a locked door feel like truth If you can hear me through the rain Say my name again [Chorus] Come back before the morning takes your name Before this quiet settles in and stays I don’t need promises dressed up in gold Just your hand in mine when the room turns cold Come back, come back, don’t let the good years end I’d rather start again than call us friends [Bridge] No grand goodbye, no final scene Just two old cups and a space between If there’s a little room for us to mend Meet me where the platform bends [Final Chorus] Come back before the morning takes your name Before this quiet settles in and stays I don’t need promises dressed up in gold Just your hand in mine when the room turns cold Come back, come back, don’t let the good years end I’d rather start again than call us friends [Outro] Your coat is still here The kettle’s gone cold
