When the Night Turns Gold

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Female] You left a paper moon beside my bed And turned the key beneath the old oak tree I heard the winter roses lift their heads As if they knew you’d come back here to me [Verse 2: Male] I crossed the fields where every clock ran slow Past foxglove bells and towers made of rain I kept the little promise that you know Folded in my coat against the plain [Pre-Chorus: Female and Male] If morning finds us on two different shores If all the painted doors are closing fast Remember how the garden held its breath And made one silver hour last [Chorus: Duet] Come, take my hand through the sleeping wood Where lost things gather, gentle and good Though every road bends out of sight I’ll know your heart by its small, brave light When the last dream loosens its hold Keep me near, keep me near While the night turns gold [Verse 3: Female] The little birds are quiet in the hall The candles lean as though they understand I trace your name where ivy climbs the wall And feel the dawn arrive without a sound [Bridge: Male] No crown can keep the seasons from their flight No spell can ask the years to stay But what we gave each other in that place Will not be carried away [Final Chorus: Duet] Come, take my hand through the sleeping wood Where lost things gather, gentle and good Though every road bends out of sight I’ll know your heart by its small, brave light When the last dream loosens its hold Keep me near, keep me near While the night turns gold [Outro: Duet, choir humming] When the night turns gold I’ll find you there Where the roses remember And the air is kind
