The Rabbit Hole

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Woman] You left your coat beside the stair, Still folded where the dust motes turn. I found a white hare in the garden, With one blue thread caught in its fur. [Verse 2: Man] It led me past the iron roses, Down where the roots had split the stone. I heard your step below the water, A little farther from my own. [Pre-Chorus: Duet] If I follow, will you know me? If you call, I’ll cross the seam. [Chorus: Duet] Meet me where the rabbit hole Bends beneath the old oak tree. You were summer, I was winter; Still you left a place for me. Though the path unwinds forever, Though the dark may take its toll, I would lose the world above us Just to find you down the hole. [Verse 3: Woman] I wore the ribbon you had given, Its faded red against my hand. The hallway stretched like Sunday evening; Your voice came through the shifting sand. [Verse 4: Man] I kept the little brass key hidden, Though every lock had disappeared. I thought that love could make us fearless; I never knew how fear could steer. [Bridge: Duet] [Woman] The hare has gone; the thread remains. [Man] The key is warm against my palm. [Woman] Your face is breaking into rain. [Man] Your name is still my only psalm. [Duet] We cannot keep the dawn from coming; We can keep this moment whole. [Final Chorus: Duet] Meet me where the rabbit hole Bends beneath the old oak tree. You were summer, I was winter; Still you turn and look for me. Though the path unwinds forever, Though the dark may take its toll, I will hold you in the falling, Even as we lose the whole. [Outro: Woman and Man] [Woman] One blue thread beneath the stone. [Man] One brass key, and not alone. [Duet] Down the hole, our hands still hold.
