Walk Beside Her

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Amanda keeps the curtains drawn at noon Counts out the hours by the ache in her knees Jeremy waits beside the kitchen sink Trying to find the words that might bring ease She says the doctor named the Lyme disease And mold has left her body out of tune He hears the names, but cannot feel the weight Of waking up exhausted every afternoon [Pre-Chorus] He wants a map, a cause, a thing to hold Something he can see and understand [Chorus] “Help me make sense of what you’re going through,” He says, then wonders if he’s hearing true But doubt can’t measure what the hurting costs Or bring back all the ordinary days she’s lost Amanda, I don’t know what to say I’m trying not to turn away If I can’t feel the storm you’re walking through I can still believe it’s real to you [Verse 2] He watches plans dissolve before they start The drive gets canceled, supper left untouched Some days she laughs and some days she can’t And he mistakes the difference for too much He asks if maybe time will make it clear Then sees her jaw set tight against the pain The answer isn’t hiding in his doubt And love won’t ask her to explain again [Pre-Chorus] He wants a chart, a reason, something known But she needs someone who will stay close [Chorus] “Help me make sense of what you’re going through,” He says, then wonders if he’s hearing true But doubt can’t measure what the hurting costs Or bring back all the ordinary days she’s lost Amanda, I don’t know what to say I’m trying not to turn away If I can’t feel the storm you’re walking through I can still believe it’s real to you [Bridge] Maybe he doesn’t have to solve the mystery Maybe he can sit beside her quietly Bring the water, dim the kitchen light Ask what helps tonight [Final Chorus] “Help me make sense of what you’re going through,” He says, and lets the question lead him to A gentler way to meet what he can’t prove To listen first, and make a little room Amanda, I don’t know what to say But I’m not leaving you alone today I can’t feel every mile you’ve made it through I can still believe, and stay with you [Outro] He can’t explain the road she’s walking through But he can walk beside her, one day at a time
