One Ordinary Day at a Time

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your jacket on the kitchen chair The sleeve still caught in the drawer you slammed I found your note underneath the glass Three crooked words in your careful hand [Pre-Chorus] I drove past the turn where we used to stop And kept both hands on the wheel [Chorus] I’m still learning how to let you go With your name caught under my tongue Every mile says I should know Some things end before they’re done I can pack the boxes, clear the room Put the photographs away But I’m still learning how to let you go One ordinary day at a time [Verse 2] Your coffee mug is chipped along the rim I nearly tossed it out last Saturday Then I stood there with the trash bag open Like a fool who’d forgotten what to say [Pre-Chorus] The house is quiet, the clock runs loud I finally hear what I feel [Chorus] I’m still learning how to let you go With your name caught under my tongue Every mile says I should know Some things end before they’re done I can pack the boxes, clear the room Put the photographs away But I’m still learning how to let you go One ordinary day at a time [Bridge] Maybe healing isn’t some grand escape Maybe it’s the small things I can face Your mug can stay, the door can close I’ll take one breath, then let it go [Final Chorus] I’m still learning how to let you go Though your name still catches on my tongue Every mile says I should know Some things end before they’re done I can pack the boxes, clear the room Let the morning find its way Yeah, I’m still learning how to let you go One ordinary day at a time [Outro] One ordinary day at a time
