Leave a Little Light On

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I left my brother waiting by the courthouse door With Mama’s old Ford idling in the rain Took the county line like I’d done before And called my running by a different name [Verse 2] Years came due in a room above a bar A folded letter kept beneath my bed “Your boy still asks if you remember who you are” I read those words till every lie went dead [Chorus] I ain’t asking for the past to turn around Or for the years I stole to come back home Just leave a little light on in that town I’m walking in with nothing left to hide If there’s a place for me beside your side I’ll earn it one plain day at a time [Verse 3] I found my brother mending fence at dawn His hands were scarred the same as mine He didn’t say the hurt was gone He handed me a post and said, “Hold this line” [Bridge] Some debts don’t vanish when you say you’re sorry Some doors take more than one knock to swing But a man can start by staying through the morning And doing what he said he’d bring [Chorus] I ain’t asking for the past to turn around Or for the years I stole to come back home Just leave a little light on in that town I’m walking in with nothing left to hide If there’s a place for me beside your side I’ll earn it one plain day at a time [Outro] The fence runs straight beneath the evening sky My brother’s truck is parked beside mine No easy words, no promise made Just two sets of hands, and one more day
