The Light Beside the Door

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You leave your blue coat on my chair Rain ticking softly on the pane I keep the kettle near the boil As if you might come home again [Pre-Chorus] The hallway holds its breath tonight I count the steps from here to you [Chorus] Come back, come back, across the miles I’m calling higher than before Come back, come back, and stay awhile I’ll leave the light beside the door [Verse 2] Your paper map is folded wrong The little tear still marks the coast I trace the road with one slow hand And wonder where you miss me most [Pre-Chorus] The morning gathers at the glass I hear your name and let it through [Chorus] Come back, come back, across the miles I’m calling higher than before Come back, come back, and stay awhile I’ll leave the light beside the door [Bridge] If all you have is one more mile If all you have is one small sign I’ll meet you where the road bends west And bring the words I kept inside [Final Chorus] Come back, come back, across the miles I’m calling higher than before Come back, come back, and stay awhile I’ll leave the light beside the door Come back, come back, I hear you now Your blue coat waiting by the door
