Two Small Towns Apart

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Your blue mug waits beside the sink Like you might walk in before I blink I fold your map beneath the mail And trace the road that runs past Nashville [Pre-Chorus] You call when the motel sign turns red I hear the tired miles inside what you said [Chorus] We’re two small towns apart tonight Your porch light, my kitchen light A thousand miles can pull the thread But not the promise that we said When the weeks run long and the phone goes quiet I keep your Sunday note beside me Some day this road will bring you home Till then, my heart knows where you are [Verse 2] You send a picture of the county fair Your jacket on the chair, your hand not there I save the ticket from our first dance Inside the drawer with the old floor plans [Pre-Chorus] You tell me spring has reached your side Here, the fields are still winter-white [Chorus] We’re two small towns apart tonight Your porch light, my kitchen light A thousand miles can pull the thread But not the promise that we said When the weeks run long and the phone goes quiet I keep your Sunday note beside me Some day this road will bring you home Till then, my heart knows where you are [Bridge] When your tires turn down our gravel lane I’ll leave the kettle singing in the rain No grand words, no need to explain Just your hand finding mine again [Final Chorus] We were two small towns apart tonight Now your boots are by the door inside A thousand miles could pull the thread But never loosen what we said All those weeks when the phone went quiet I kept your Sunday note beside me This old road finally brought you home And my heart knew just where you are [Outro] Your blue mug’s warm beside the sink You’re right here before I even blink
