Leave a Little Room

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your blue mug by the sink The one with the chipped white rim I keep meaning to box it up Then I make another cup in it Your old map’s folded by the door With the county line worn thin I know every turn by heart Still don’t know where to begin [Pre-Chorus] The porch boards count my steps The screen door takes its time I tell myself I’m doing fine Then your name crosses my mind [Chorus] I’m learning how to leave a little room For the life I didn’t plan to choose A small-town road can bend and still go on I can miss you and keep moving toward the dawn There’s a place for what we were And a place for what comes next I’m learning how to leave a little room And take the rest of me back [Verse 2] At Miller’s, they still ask about you I say you found a place out west The waitress brings the peach pie warm And doesn’t make me say the rest I planted basil by the steps It’s leaning toward the afternoon Funny how a stubborn thing Can find its way into bloom [Pre-Chorus] The porch boards count my steps The screen door takes its time I tell myself I’m doing fine And this time, I almost am [Chorus] I’m learning how to leave a little room For the life I didn’t plan to choose A small-town road can bend and still go on I can miss you and keep moving toward the dawn There’s a place for what we were And a place for what comes next I’m learning how to leave a little room And take the rest of me back [Bridge] Maybe healing isn’t one big turning Maybe it’s the kettle, maybe it’s the rain Maybe it’s the first night I sleep through And don’t reach for your side again [Final Chorus] I’m learning how to leave a little room For the life I’m finally free to choose That old county road keeps carrying me on I can miss you and still be glad you’re gone There’s a place for what we were And a place for what comes next I’m learning how to leave a little room And take the rest of me back [Outro] Blue mug by the sink Basil by the steps I’m taking the rest of me back
