The Pull-Out Couch

Lyrics

She was drivin' to the job when the phone rang in her hand. Mom's voice came weak and shaky from a hospital bed. Didn't ask how bad or how long, just turned the car around. Birthday duck boat tickets waiting on the ground. Chorus. She won't leave her mama's side, not for a minute, not for a mile. Sleeps on the pull-out couch and wears a weary smile. Two women fightin' the same fight instead of fightin' each other. Side by side like sisters, closer than any other. Verse two. Time flipped the table and the little girl grew tall. Now the mother's leanin' on her for every little call. Took all these years of stubborn days and all them crossed arms. For her to look and finally see a woman, not a child in her arms. Chorus. She won't leave her mama's side, not for a minute, not for a mile. Sleeps on the pull-out couch and wears a weary smile. Two women fightin' the same fight instead of fightin' each other. Side by side like sisters, closer than any other. Bridge. The love ain't changed one bit, still runs the same old way. Daughter's still her little girl no matter what the years may say. She'll stay right there all night, lights turned down low. Holdin' the hand that used to hold hers when the world was small. Final chorus. She won't leave her mama's side, not for a minute, not for a mile. Sleeps on the pull-out couch and wears a weary smile. Two women fightin' side by side instead of fightin' each other. And she'll always be her mama's little girl, closer than any other.
