My Clematis

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You tied the young vine to the porch rail With a strip cut from an old blue shirt Said, “Give it room, it knows its way up” Then went back to turning the garden dirt [Verse 2] By June it had found the kitchen window And combed the brick with leaves and green I watched you lift one purple flower Like it was something you had seen [Chorus] My clematis, climb where you please Take the fence, take the morning, take the breeze Every bloom brings your hands back to me My clematis, climb where you please [Verse 3] The summer storm shook loose the twine You came outside in your slippers and coat We tied it up beneath the eaves While rain ran silver down your throat [Chorus] My clematis, climb where you please Take the fence, take the morning, take the breeze Every bloom brings your hands back to me My clematis, climb where you please [Bridge] Now I save the softest stems And leave the tangled ones alone You taught me growing takes its time And love can find its way back home [Final Chorus] My clematis, climb where you please Take the fence, take the morning, take the breeze Every bloom brings your hands back to me My clematis, climb where you please [Outro] Past the window, past the eaves My clematis, climb where you please
