Truth Walks In

Lyrics

I Told You So (Don’t Lie About Me) Verse 1 You can tell your story at the Sunday store, Leave out what happened just the night before. Shake every hand, let the rumors fly, But the Lord was there—you can’t fool His eyes. I’ve lost some sleep, I’ve lost some friends, Wondered if the whispers ever end. But I won’t trade my soul to clear my name; I won’t fight a lie by doing the same. Chorus Don’t lie about me, don’t twist what you know, God hates a lying tongue—the Bible tells us so. You can dress it up pretty, speak it soft and slow, But a lie’s still a lie wherever it goes. When the truth walks in and the whole room knows, I won’t have to say, “I told you so.” Verse 2 There’s an empty chair at the family meal, And a hurt that a handshake couldn’t heal. Somebody heard what somebody said; Now we’re strangers over words that spread. I’ve rehearsed my answer a thousand times, Driving home beneath those power lines. Then I pull in the driveway, turn the engine off, And ask God to help me lay it all down. Chorus Don’t lie about me, don’t twist what you know, God hates a lying tongue—the Bible tells us so. You can dress it up pretty, speak it soft and slow, But a lie’s still a lie wherever it goes. When the truth walks in and the whole room knows, I won’t have to say, “I told you so.” Bridge Lord, put a watch upon my mouth, When anger wants to come pouring out. If I’m asking them to tell what’s true, Then let me hold myself to it too. Give me strength to stand my ground, And grace when the walls come tumbling down. Final Chorus Don’t lie about me, just tell what you know, God hates a lying tongue—the Bible tells us so. There’s still time to mend what those words tore apart, But the truth’s got to come from an honest heart. When it finally does, I hope you know, I’d rather have peace than “I told you so.” Outro I’d rather hear, “Forgive me,” Than say, “I told you so.”
