The Ordinary Things

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your blue mug by the sink A paper list beneath the string Of keys we never learned to share Your handwriting still waiting there [Pre-Chorus] I read the words, then fold them small Like that could change what came before [Chorus] I keep the ordinary things The chipped cup and the door that sticks The way you counted out the change And called me back to say my name You’re gone, but every room still knows The quiet shape your leaving holds [Verse 2] The garden leans toward afternoon One stubborn rose came back in June I meant to tell you, didn’t know How much a little thing could hold [Pre-Chorus] I read the words, then fold them small Like that could change what came before [Chorus] I keep the ordinary things The chipped cup and the door that sticks The way you counted out the change And called me back to say my name You’re gone, but every room still knows The quiet shape your leaving holds [Bridge] Some days I almost hear you laugh When rain comes tapping on the glass I let the moment stay awhile Then set your mug beside the tile [Final Chorus] I keep the ordinary things The chipped cup and the door that sticks The way you counted out the change And called me back to say my name You’re gone, but every room still knows The quiet shape your leaving holds [Outro] Your handwriting still waiting there And I still leave the cupboard bare
