If I Had a Dollar

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Monday, the pickup was booked for eight By nine, I was watching the yard gate “Turbo went out,” came a text from the road Then a dashboard light took the blame for the load One flat tire, then the next tale rolled in “Stuck at the last stop, they won’t let me in” I keep a cold coffee beside the dispatch phone And a list of good reasons to sit here alone [Chorus] If I had a dollar for every driver excuse I’ve heard I’d be retired, gone fishing, not waiting on a word From a rig that’s late, from a load that won’t depart Each promise rolls in heavy, then breaks down in my heart If I had a dollar for every driver excuse I’ve heard I’d be retired [Verse 2] One forgot his mother’s funeral, swore he’d mixed the date One had food poisoning, couldn’t leave the gate One said his dog died; I let the silence stay One said his wife had left and took the keys away Then “stars weren’t aligned” came soft across the phone “This freight ain’t what I haul,” like I’d booked it alone The rate con took too long, he said, so he moved on And there went another sunrise, and another load gone [Chorus] If I had a dollar for every driver excuse I’ve heard I’d be retired, gone fishing, not waiting on a word From a rig that’s late, from a load that won’t depart Each promise rolls in heavy, then breaks down in my heart If I had a dollar for every driver excuse I’ve heard I’d be retired [Bridge] I know a man can hit a stretch of bad luck A blown tire, a hard day, a truck that won’t start But the warehouse clock don’t care what went wrong And the freight keeps on waiting while the morning moves on [Verse 3] “Dispatcher booked another load,” was the last one I heard No apology, just a click and a dial tone blurred I signed off the board as the day turned gray Somewhere a driver’s got a reason, and a shipper’s got to wait [Final Chorus] If I had a dollar for every driver excuse I’ve heard I’d be retired, gone fishing, not waiting on a word From a rig that’s late, from a load that won’t depart Each promise rolls in heavy, then breaks down in my heart If I had a dollar for every driver excuse I’ve heard I’d be retired [Outro] I’d be retired While the freight sits waiting
