Coat of Many Colors

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Mama saved the scraps beside the kitchen chair A little red, a little gold, a square of Sunday blue She stitched them by the window while the evening settled in And told me every piece held someone I once knew [Chorus] She made me a coat from the colors we had From Sunday dresses, work shirts, and a patch from Dad Every crooked seam had a story to hold A small-town quilt sewn into something to wear I walked out proud in that coat of many colors And carried my whole family everywhere [Verse 2] There was green from Grandpa’s garden, brown from Mama’s coat A faded bit of gingham from the summer we moved west She hummed while her needle crossed the cloth in steady rows And tucked a tiny blessing where the lining met my chest [Chorus] She made me a coat from the colors we had From Sunday dresses, work shirts, and a patch from Dad Every crooked seam had a story to hold A small-town quilt sewn into something to wear I walked out proud in that coat of many colors And carried my whole family everywhere [Bridge] Years went by; the elbows thinned The buttons changed, the thread wore through But when the cold came calling again I felt her hands still pulling me through [Final Chorus] She made me a coat from the colors we had From Sunday dresses, work shirts, and a patch from Dad Every crooked seam had a story to hold A small-town quilt sewn into something to wear I walk on proud with those colors around me And carry my whole family everywhere [Outro] Everywhere, everywhere In every thread, she’s there
