I'll Mean It When I Call

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You picked up on the second ring But there was no hello Just your breath across the line And all the words I owe I said, “I know I made it worse By waiting till tonight” You said, “You always find the words When you’re trying to be right” [Pre-Chorus] So I stopped building my defense And let the quiet land I heard the hurt beneath your voice And finally understand [Chorus] I called you, but you’re upset And I can’t blame you for that I’m not asking you to forget Or take the whole thing back I just want to say I’m sorry For the way I let you down I’ll be here when you’re ready I won’t talk you out of how you feel right now [Verse 2] You told me how you saved me a seat At your sister’s little show I walked in late, checked my phone Like I had somewhere else to go You laughed it off in front of them Then cried when you got home I heard that part and wished I’d been The man you thought you’d known [Pre-Chorus] No polished line can fix the night No promise makes it small I should’ve shown you you mattered Before you had to ask at all [Chorus] I called you, but you’re upset And I can’t blame you for that I’m not asking you to forget Or take the whole thing back I just want to say I’m sorry For the way I let you down I’ll be here when you’re ready I won’t talk you out of how you feel right now [Bridge] You don’t owe me a soft answer You don’t owe me one more try I’ll do better in the daylight Not just when we say goodbye When you’re ready, tell me plainly What you need and what you can’t I’ll listen without reaching For the words that help me stand [Final Chorus] I called you, and you’re still upset I know the hurt won’t disappear I’m not asking you to forget I’m asking how to meet you here I just want to show I’m sorry In the choices I make now I’ll be here when you’re ready I’ll respect the space you need right now [Outro] You don’t have to answer tonight I’ll mean it when I call again
