Where the Hard Road Bends

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You kept the last bus ticket in your coat A folded map with rain along the road Your brother’s old advice beneath your tongue “Take the long way home; you’re not too far gone” [Pre-Chorus] When the room gets small and the phone goes quiet There’s a hand reaching out if you’ll just try it [Chorus] I’ll meet you where the hard road bends When the daylight thins, when the night won’t end We can carry what we can’t set down Step by step, we’ll turn around If you lose your way, if you lose your name I’ll be there beside you all the same [Verse 2] At the corner store, you counted out your change The woman at the counter knew your face She slid you coffee, said, “Your dad came by” You laughed, then let the old hurt leave your eyes [Pre-Chorus] No grand speech, no promise carved in stone Just a porch light on, and you’re not alone [Chorus] I’ll meet you where the hard road bends When the daylight thins, when the night won’t end We can carry what we can’t set down Step by step, we’ll turn around If you lose your way, if you lose your name I’ll be there beside you all the same [Blues Break] That old screen door still knows your weight The kettle sings; it’s never too late You don’t have to tell me where you’ve been Come sit awhile, and breathe again [Bridge] Every mile you made through the weather Every day you held yourself together Counts for more than you can see Leave a little room for mercy [Final Chorus] I’ll meet you where the hard road bends When the daylight thins, when the night won’t end We can carry what we can’t set down Step by step, we’ll turn around If you lose your way, if you lose your name I’ll be there beside you all the same I’ll be there beside you all the same [Outro] The porch light’s on Come on home
