Correctional Officers' Blues

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Coffee gone cold by the guardroom door Same old keys and the same hard floor Dim-lit hallways swallow the sound Boot heels counting another round [Chorus] One more count, one more turn One more hour till the shift lets go These walls slam shut, the clocks crawl slow This is the correctional officers’ blues [Verse 2] A paper cup with a bitter ring A radio coughs, then forgets to sing I walk the line where the paint wears thin The night keeps asking me back again [Chorus] One more count, one more turn One more hour till the shift lets go These walls slam shut, the clocks crawl slow This is the correctional officers’ blues [Bridge] Keys on my belt, dust in my throat A small-town moon in a barred-up note I keep my head and I keep my pace Till morning finds this tired place [Final Chorus] One more count, one more turn One more hour till the shift lets go These walls slam shut, the clocks crawl slow This is the correctional officers’ blues [Outro] Coffee gone cold, the last door cries One more count beneath tired eyes
