[narrator] The yellow lines on Route one oh nine didn’t look like paint anymore. They looked like a pulse. The dashboard clock glowed a pale, mechanical green— 2:14 AM. Outside, the world was swallowed whole by a thick, suffocating stretch of backwoods asphalt, the kind of road that felt like it was unwinding from a spool that never ended. The headlights caught the pale bellies of low-hanging leaves, casting skeletal shadows across the hood of the sedan. Inside, the only sound was the hypnotic, rhythmic hum of the tires against the pavement. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. It was the heartbeat of a machine, steady enough to put a desperate man to sleep. his hands were loose on the steering wheel, his fingers barely gripping the leather. His eyelids felt like iron gates being pulled shut by gravity. He blinked, hard, the motion slow and agonizing. Each time his eyes closed, the darkness lasted a fraction of a second longer. He was drifting. Not just across the yellow line, but out of his own skin. Reality was stretching thin, frayed at the edges like an old coat. Then, the car grew cold. Freezing. He didn’t look to his right, but he could feel the sudden, heavy density in the passenger seat. A shape materialized from the shadows of the cabin, smelling faintly of old dust and dry, forgotten paper. "You're still looking in the rearview," a voice whispered. It didn't come from the air; it vibrated directly inside his skull. It was heavy, dragging, like anchor chains scraping a harbor floor. The Ghost of the one oh nine. "Look at what you left behind. If you turn around, it's all still there. The old rooms. The old warmth. Why keep driving into the dark when you can just stay here. tethered to me?" his head lolled to the side. The steering wheel slipped an inch. His foot pressed heavier on the gas. The car began to veer, angling toward the deep black shoulder where the tree line met the ditch.
