THE SPACE YOU LEFT BEHIND

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I still leave a light on in the kitchen Like you might come in out of the rain I sit at the table past midnight Listening for your step again The silence settles heavy as stone On every room we used to know I never thought a heart could feel So lost with nowhere left to go [Pre-Chorus] And the night keeps pulling me under Where the words I couldn’t say still shine [Chorus] There’s a long, dark road through the hollow And I drink down the hurt one day at a time I keep reaching for the life we were given For the hand that slipped away from mine Now there’s nothing left to rescue me From the truth I can’t outrun Just the ache of all the space you left behind And the mornings without the sun [Verse 2] I found your sweater down in the laundry Still holding the shape of where you’d been I tried to wash away your scent But the water only brought it back again Now I trace old roads across Norway With my finger on a folded map As if I could find the turn that led you Somewhere you might still turn back [Pre-Chorus] But the miles don’t answer my questions And the sky won’t tell me where you are [Chorus] There’s a long, dark road through the hollow And I drink down the hurt one day at a time I keep reaching for the life we were given For the hand that slipped away from mine Now there’s nothing left to rescue me From the truth I can’t outrun Just the ache of all the space you left behind And the mornings without the sun [Bridge] Maybe ghosts are only memories That haven’t learned to leave Maybe love stays in the small things We’re too heartbroken to keep So I’ll fold your sweater gently Set the map beside the door And let the dawn come find me Even if I’m not ready anymore [Final Chorus] There’s a long, dark road through the hollow But I’m learning how to walk it alone I still reach for the life we were given When the night comes calling me home No, there’s nothing left to rescue But the pieces I can find And the ache of all the space you left behind Will soften with the time [Outro] I still leave a light on in the kitchen… Just a little less than before.
