Porch light

Lyrics

[Intro – spoken low] Three a.m. and the gravel's talkin' Somebody's still awake [Verse 1] I sold my watch in a Joplin pawn shop Traded time for one more night Told my mama I was workin' Told myself it'd be alright Every mile marker looked like a reason Every exit looked like a door I kept runnin' from the man in the mirror Till I couldn't run no more [Pre-Chorus] And I don't deserve it But I know it's burnin' [Chorus] She left the porch light on Through every wrong I've done Through every year I was gone She never let it go dark I'm comin' up the road With nothin' but my soul And I can see it from the yard She left the porch light on [Verse 2] Got a pocket full of ninety-day chips And a heart full of borrowed time Every Sunday I drive past that old house And I swear I see it shine Ain't no preacher ever saved me Ain't no needle, ain't no bar Just the thought of one small window Glowin' yellow in the dark [Pre-Chorus] And I don't deserve it But I know it's burnin' [Chorus] [Bridge] Now I'm the one on the step at midnight Watchin' for headlights through the rain 'Cause somewhere out there there's a boy like I was And he might find his way So I'll leave it on, I'll leave it on [Final Chorus – key up, full band] I left the porch light on Through every wrong you've done Through every year you were gone I'll never let it go dark Come on up the road With nothin' but your soul You'll see it from the yard I left the porch light on [Outro – stripped] Gravel's talkin' Somebody's still awake
